AI-Driven Automated Privilege Escalation

Accelerate authorized privilege-escalation discovery by having an AI agent reason over enumeration data and rank exploitable paths mapped to ATT&CK.

**The problem**
Privilege escalation is one of the most time-consuming manual phases of a penetration test or red-team engagement, requiring enumeration, misconfiguration analysis, and chained exploitation across Linux, Windows, and cloud. Human testers miss subtle privilege paths and cannot exhaustively reason over large attack surfaces. Defenders, in turn, lack a way to continuously validate that escalation paths are actually closed.

**What you'll build**
Build a lab-only, AI-driven privilege-escalation assistant that enumerates a host or cloud identity, reasons over collected data with an LLM, and proposes ranked escalation paths mapped to MITRE ATT&CK, with safe validation steps. The system chains enumeration tools, correlates misconfigurations (SUID, sudo rules, weak ACLs, cloud role chains), and explains each path so it is a training and validation aid, not an autonomous exploit engine. It runs strictly in authorized, isolated environments with guardrails, audit logging, and human approval before any action.

**Objective** — Accelerate authorized privilege-escalation discovery by having an AI agent reason over enumeration data and rank exploitable paths mapped to ATT&CK.

**Expected outcome** — A lab-scoped AI privilege-escalation assistant that outputs ranked, ATT&CK-mapped escalation paths with explanations and remediation for a target host or cloud identity.

**Difficulty** — Expert — requires deep multi-platform privesc knowledge, safe agent design, and disciplined guardrails to prevent misuse.

**Primary category** — Penetration Testing; Secondary = Offensive Security Automation, AI/ML Security, Purple Teaming

**Security domains** — Primary = Red Team; Secondary = AI Security, Purple Team, Cloud Security

**Technical focus** — Privilege escalation (Linux/Windows/cloud), enumeration automation, misconfiguration analysis, attack-path reasoning, LLM tool-use/agents, ATT&CK mapping, exploit chaining, safe-execution guardrails, remediation generation

**Core technologies** — Languages: Python, Bash, PowerShell; Frameworks/Libraries: LLM agent framework (LangGraph/tool-calling), pydantic; Security Tools: LinPEAS/WinPEAS, BloodHound, PMapper, PowerUp, Prowler; Cloud/Infra: isolated lab VMs/containers, cloud sandbox accounts; AI/Data: LLM with tool-use, retrieval over privesc technique KB; Databases: graph store for attack paths, PostgreSQL for findings

**Where it's valued** — Offensive security firms, red teams, penetration testing providers, purple teams, security research labs

**Careers it builds toward** — Penetration Tester, Red Team Operator, Offensive Security Engineer, Purple Team Engineer, Security Automation Engineer

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: Privilege Escalation — Abuse Elevation Control Mechanism (T1548), Exploitation for Privilege Escalation (T1068), Valid Accounts (T1078); Discovery — Permission Groups Discovery (T1069), System Information Discovery (T1082); Cloud role chaining under Valid Accounts: Cloud Accounts (T1078.004). MITRE ATLAS AML.T0040 (AI-enabled offense) applies to the agent itself
• NIST CSF 2.0: Identify, Protect (as validation feeds defensive hardening); supports Detect via generated detections
• OWASP: N/A for host privesc; API/Cloud Top 10 relevant when escalating cloud identities
• CIS Controls v8: 4 (Secure Configuration), 5 (Account Management), 6 (Access Control Management) — the controls this project validates

**Innovation** — Research-Level Project — AI-assisted attack-path reasoning is an active research frontier; strong educational and purple-team value but must remain lab-scoped and human-supervised. Scores: Innovation 8/10, Startup 5/10, Enterprise-Readiness 5/10, Patent = Possible.
