AI/ML-Driven IDS/IPS & Threat Detector

Develop and rigorously evaluate an ML-based intrusion detection/prevention system that is explainable and adversarially hardened.

**The problem**
Signature-based IDS/IPS miss novel and polymorphic attacks, while pure-anomaly systems drown SOCs in false positives. Enterprises need detection that generalizes to unseen behavior yet stays explainable and resistant to evasion. Few practitioners can build, evaluate, and harden an ML detection model against adversarial manipulation.

**What you'll build**
Build a hybrid ML-driven network/host intrusion detector that ingests flow and log telemetry, engineers features, and trains supervised and anomaly models to classify malicious activity, with an inline IPS mode for blocking. Add explainability (SHAP), drift monitoring, and an adversarial-robustness test harness mapped to MITRE ATLAS. Benchmark against realistic datasets and integrate alerts into a SIEM/SOAR pipeline.

**Objective** — Develop and rigorously evaluate an ML-based intrusion detection/prevention system that is explainable and adversarially hardened.

**Expected outcome** — A trained, benchmarked IDS/IPS pipeline with precision/recall/false-positive metrics, SHAP explanations, an adversarial-evasion test report, and SIEM alert integration.

**Difficulty** — Advanced — combines feature engineering, model evaluation, streaming inference, and adversarial ML.

**Primary category** — AI/ML Security & Detection Engineering; Secondary = Network Security Monitoring, SOC, Threat Detection

**Security domains** — Primary = AI Security; Secondary = Blue Team, Security Research, DevSecOps, Incident Response

**Technical focus** — network flow analysis, feature engineering, supervised classification, unsupervised/anomaly detection, streaming inference, model explainability (XAI), concept-drift detection, adversarial ML robustness, class imbalance handling, SIEM/SOAR integration

**Core technologies** — Languages: Python, some Go/C for packet path; Frameworks/Libraries: scikit-learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow, XGBoost, SHAP, ART (Adversarial Robustness Toolbox); Security Tools: Zeek, Suricata, Wazuh/ELK, CICFlowMeter; Cloud/Infra: Kafka/Spark streaming, Docker/Kubernetes; AI/Data: CIC-IDS2017/UNSW-NB15/CSE-CIC datasets, MLflow, feature store; Databases: Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL, time-series DB

**Where it's valued** — SOC/MSSP, network security vendors, finance, healthcare, cloud providers, critical infrastructure

**Careers it builds toward** — ML Security Engineer, Detection Engineer, SOC Data Scientist, Threat Detection Engineer, AI Security Researcher

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATLAS: ML Model Evasion, Adversarial Perturbation of inputs, Model Poisoning, and Model Inference/Extraction risks against the detector itself (defensive hardening focus)
• NIST CSF 2.0: Detect (primary) and Respond (IPS blocking, alert triage); supports Identify via asset/behavior baselining
• OWASP: OWASP ML Security Top 10 (ML01 Input Manipulation, ML02 Data Poisoning); LLM Top 10 if LLM triage added
• CIS Controls v8: 13 (Network Monitoring & Defense), 8 (Audit Log Management), 17 (Incident Response Management)

**Innovation** — Improved Existing Solution — ML IDS is well-trodden, but explainable + adversarially hardened + drift-aware detection with ATLAS mapping raises it toward product grade. Scores: Innovation 7/10, Startup 7/10, Enterprise-Readiness 7/10, Patent = Possible.
