Automated Compliance Enforcement

Move from detecting to automatically remediating compliance and security drift so cloud resources continuously self-heal into a compliant state.

**The problem**
Detecting compliance violations is not enough — in dynamic cloud environments, misconfigurations reappear faster than humans can remediate them, so continuous detection without automated correction leaves a persistent exposure window. Manual remediation is slow, inconsistent, and does not scale across thousands of resources. Organizations need self-healing guardrails that not only find drift but automatically bring resources back into a compliant, secure state.

**What you'll build**
Build an automated enforcement engine that reacts to non-compliant cloud state in real time and remediates it: event-driven detection (AWS Config/EventBridge, Azure Policy, GCP Org Policy) triggers remediation actions (Cloud Custodian, Lambda/Functions, GitOps reconciliation) governed by policy-as-code, with guardrails, approval gates for high-risk fixes, and full audit logging. Preventive controls (SCPs, admission control) stop violations at creation, while corrective automation handles drift, all mapped to control frameworks.

**Objective** — Move from detecting to automatically remediating compliance and security drift so cloud resources continuously self-heal into a compliant state.

**Expected outcome** — An event-driven enforcement system that detects a live misconfiguration (e.g., public bucket, open SG) and auto-remediates it with logged, auditable, guardrailed action.

**Difficulty** — Advanced — real-time, event-driven auto-remediation with safety guardrails is operationally demanding and higher-risk than detection alone.

**Primary category** — Cloud Security / Compliance Automation; Secondary = GRC, SOAR, Policy-as-Code, CSPM

**Security domains** — Primary = Cloud Security; Secondary = GRC, DevSecOps, Blue Team, SOAR/Automation

**Technical focus** — Event-driven remediation, auto-remediation, preventive guardrails (SCP/admission control), drift correction, GitOps reconciliation, continuous compliance, security automation/SOAR, policy-as-code enforcement, approval workflows

**Core technologies** — Languages: Python, Rego, YAML, HCL; Frameworks/Libraries: Cloud Custodian, OPA/Gatekeeper, Kyverno, Terraform; Security Tools: AWS Config/EventBridge/Lambda, Azure Policy remediation, GCP Org Policy/Cloud Functions, Prowler; Cloud/Infra: AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, GitOps (Argo/Flux); AI/Data: risk scoring to gate auto vs. manual remediation; Databases: PostgreSQL/DynamoDB for action/audit ledger

**Where it's valued** — Regulated cloud enterprises (finance, healthcare, government), large SaaS, MSSPs, platform/cloud-ops teams

**Careers it builds toward** — Cloud Security Engineer, Cloud Security Automation Engineer, DevSecOps Engineer, GRC Automation Engineer, SecOps/SOAR Engineer

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: Corrective response to Modify Cloud Compute Infrastructure T1578, Data from Cloud Storage T1530 (exposure remediation), Account Manipulation T1098 (revoking rogue roles/keys), Valid Accounts: Cloud Accounts T1078.004
• NIST CSF 2.0: Protect, Detect, Respond (primary), Govern
• OWASP: A05 Security Misconfiguration (infrastructure); otherwise N/A
• CIS Controls v8: 4 Secure Configuration, 5/6 Account & Access Control Management, 8 Audit Log Management, 17 Incident Response Management

**Innovation** — Improved Existing Solution — auto-remediation with safe guardrails and approval gating is a sought-after, higher-maturity capability that many enterprises still lack. Scores: Innovation 7/10, Startup 7/10, Enterprise-Readiness 8/10, Patent = Possible.
