Automated YARA Rule Generator
Automate the generation of high-fidelity, low-false-positive YARA rules from malware samples.
Writing effective YARA rules is a manual, expertise-heavy craft — analysts must balance specificity against false positives while extracting durable strings and byte patterns from malware families. This bottleneck slows detection engineering and leaves organizations exposed to fast-mutating threats. Poorly generated rules either miss variants or flood the SOC with noise.
**What you'll build**
Build a tool that ingests malware samples (and benign corpora for FP control), extracts candidate features — strings, byte patterns, imports, rich-header/PE traits, opcode n-grams — and auto-generates optimized, deduplicated YARA rules with scoring for specificity and coverage. Validate rules against benign and malicious sets to tune thresholds, and support family-level clustering so one rule can catch a variant set.
**Objective** — Automate the generation of high-fidelity, low-false-positive YARA rules from malware samples.
**Expected outcome** — A tool that outputs validated, benchmarked YARA rules (with coverage and false-positive metrics) for a given sample or malware family.
**Difficulty** — Advanced — requires PE/binary feature engineering, FP-vs-coverage optimization, and clustering; naive generation is easy but quality generation is hard.
