DNS Enumeration

Enable a student to systematically map an organization's DNS attack surface and identify exposure and takeover risks.

**The problem**
Attack surface frequently hides in an organization's DNS footprint — forgotten subdomains, exposed services, and misconfigured records that enable subdomain takeover and reconnaissance. Defenders often lack visibility into their own externally resolvable assets. Without systematic DNS enumeration, both attackers and defenders operate with an incomplete map of the perimeter.

**What you'll build**
Build a DNS enumeration and attack-surface mapping tool that performs record queries (A/AAAA/MX/TXT/NS/CNAME), zone-transfer testing, subdomain brute-forcing, and passive discovery via certificate transparency logs and public DNS datasets. Flag subdomain-takeover risks and dangling records, and produce an asset inventory. The tool doubles as a red-team recon utility and a blue-team external attack-surface management (EASM) baseline.

**Objective** — Enable a student to systematically map an organization's DNS attack surface and identify exposure and takeover risks.

**Expected outcome** — A DNS enumeration tool that outputs a deduplicated subdomain/asset inventory with flagged misconfigurations and subdomain-takeover candidates.

**Difficulty** — Beginner — straightforward with DNS libraries and public sources, though passive-recon breadth reaches Intermediate.

**Primary category** — Penetration Testing / Reconnaissance; Secondary = Attack Surface Management, Threat Intelligence, OSINT

**Security domains** — Primary = Red Team; Secondary = Blue Team (EASM), Threat Intelligence, Cloud Security, Security Research

**Technical focus** — DNS records, zone transfer (AXFR) testing, subdomain enumeration (active/passive), certificate transparency, subdomain takeover detection, OSINT, attack-surface mapping, asset inventory

**Core technologies** — Languages: Python, Bash; Frameworks/Libraries: dnspython, requests, asyncio; Security Tools: dnsrecon, dnsenum, Amass, subfinder, Sublist3r, crt.sh; Cloud/Infra: Docker, cloud DNS awareness; AI/Data: passive DNS datasets, CT logs; Databases: SQLite for asset inventory

**Where it's valued** — Penetration testing firms, EASM/ASM vendors, MSSPs, bug bounty, any internet-facing enterprise

**Careers it builds toward** — Penetration Tester, Red Team Operator, Attack Surface / EASM Analyst, Threat Intelligence Analyst, Bug Bounty Hunter

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: Reconnaissance — Gather Victim Network Information: DNS (T1590.002), Search Open Technical Databases: DNS/Passive DNS (T1596.001), Active Scanning (T1595); Resource Development context
• NIST CSF 2.0: Identify (Asset Management, external attack-surface discovery), Protect
• OWASP: Relevant to A05:2021 Security Misconfiguration (dangling/subdomain takeover); API exposure discovery
• CIS Controls v8: 1 (Enterprise Asset Inventory), 4 (Secure Configuration), 12 (Network Infrastructure Management)

**Innovation** — Improved Existing Solution — enumeration tools abound, but combining active + passive (CT/passive DNS) discovery with subdomain-takeover detection into an EASM baseline is genuinely useful. Scores: Innovation 5/10, Startup 5/10, Enterprise-Readiness 6/10, Patent = No.
