Enterprise Hardware Security Module (HSM)

Provide tamper-resistant cryptographic operations where private keys are generated and used entirely within a protected hardware/enclave boundary and never exported.

**The problem**
The highest-value cryptographic keys — root CAs, code-signing keys, blockchain treasury keys, payment HSM keys — must never exist in software memory where malware or insiders can extract them. Yet many organizations still perform sensitive signing and decryption in application memory, leaving root secrets exposed to compromise. There is a fundamental gap between needing cryptographic operations and keeping the underlying keys inside tamper-resistant, access-controlled hardware boundaries.

**What you'll build**
Design and build an enterprise HSM-style service that performs cryptographic operations (key generation, signing, decryption) inside a hardened boundary so private keys never leave it, exposing a PKCS#11/KMIP-style API to applications. Implement it against a real or emulated secure enclave (SoftHSM, TPM, AWS CloudHSM, or Intel SGX/AWS Nitro Enclaves), enforce strong authentication, role separation (crypto officer vs. user), quorum/M-of-N approval for sensitive operations, tamper-evident audit logging, and FIPS 140-3-aligned controls. Support blockchain transaction signing as a first-class use case.

**Objective** — Provide tamper-resistant cryptographic operations where private keys are generated and used entirely within a protected hardware/enclave boundary and never exported.

**Expected outcome** — A working HSM-style service (enclave/TPM/SoftHSM-backed) exposing PKCS#11/KMIP operations with role separation, quorum approval, and tamper-evident audit logging.

**Difficulty** — Enterprise/Professional — demands hardware/enclave security, cryptographic API standards, FIPS-aligned controls, and high-assurance access design.

**Primary category** — Cryptographic Infrastructure / IAM; Secondary = Cloud Security, Data Protection, Compliance

**Security domains** — Primary = Cloud Security; Secondary = GRC, Blue Team, DevSecOps, AppSec

**Technical focus** — Hardware security modules, secure enclaves (SGX/Nitro/TPM), PKCS#11, KMIP, key isolation, role separation (crypto officer/user), M-of-N quorum authorization, tamper-evidence, FIPS 140-3, attestation, blockchain transaction signing

**Core technologies** — Languages: C, Rust, Go, Python; Frameworks/Libraries: PKCS#11 (Cryptoki), OpenSSL, libsodium, KMIP libs; Security Tools: SoftHSM, TPM2 tools, AWS CloudHSM/Nitro Enclaves, Intel SGX; Cloud/Infra: AWS Nitro/CloudHSM, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform; AI/Data: anomaly detection on operation logs (optional); Databases: encrypted metadata/audit store (PostgreSQL)

**Where it's valued** — Financial services/payments, PKI/CAs, government/defense, cloud providers, crypto custody, healthcare, any FIPS-regulated environment

**Careers it builds toward** — Cryptography/PKI Engineer, Security Architect, Cloud Security Engineer, HSM/Key Management Specialist, Hardware Security Engineer

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: Defends against Credentials from Password Stores (T1555), Unsecured Credentials (T1552), Steal Application Access Token (T1528), OS Credential Dumping (T1003) of key material; raises the bar against Data Manipulation (T1565).
• NIST CSF 2.0: Protect (data security, access control, cryptography, platform security), Govern, Detect (audit)
• OWASP: Cryptographic Failures (A02), Identification & Authentication Failures (A07); ASVS cryptography verification
• CIS Controls v8: 3 Data Protection, 5 Account Management, 6 Access Control Management, 8 Audit Log Management

**Innovation** — Enterprise Product — HSMs are a mature, high-assurance category; a working enclave-backed HSM with quorum control and blockchain signing is a standout, deeply employable build. Scores: Innovation 7/10, Startup 7/10, Enterprise-Readiness 9/10, Patent = Possible.
