Full Penetration-Testing Virtual Lab
Build a reproducible, isolated range that supports the complete penetration-testing lifecycle.
Aspiring offensive-security practitioners lack safe, realistic environments to practice the full attack lifecycle, and ad-hoc setups are fragile, inconsistent, and hard to reset. Enterprises likewise need reproducible ranges for training and tool validation. Without a structured lab, skills development is slow and testing risks bleeding into production.
**What you'll build**
Design and automate a segmented virtual penetration-testing range with vulnerable targets, an attacker workstation, and network segmentation, provisioned as code for repeatable teardown/rebuild. Include guided attack paths spanning reconnaissance, exploitation, privilege escalation, lateral movement, and reporting, with optional blue-team telemetry for purple-team exercises. The lab is fully isolated and versioned.
**Objective** — Build a reproducible, isolated range that supports the complete penetration-testing lifecycle.
**Expected outcome** — An infrastructure-as-code virtual lab with documented attack paths and a reset/rebuild workflow.
**Difficulty** — Advanced — network segmentation, IaC automation, and multi-host attack-chain design demand broad systems and security knowledge.
**Primary category** — Penetration Testing; Secondary = Security Lab/Range Engineering, DevSecOps
**Security domains** — Primary = Red Team; Secondary = Purple Team, Blue Team, DevSecOps, Penetration Testing, Incident Response
**Technical focus** — Network segmentation, Vulnerable-target provisioning, Infrastructure as code, Attack-path design, Privilege escalation, Lateral movement, C2 basics, Range automation, Blue-team telemetry
**Core technologies** — Languages: Bash, Python, YAML/HCL; Frameworks/Libraries: Ansible, Vagrant, Terraform; Security Tools: Kali Linux, Metasploit, Nmap, BloodHound, Active Directory lab, Vulnhub/HackTheBox-style targets; Cloud/Infra: VirtualBox/VMware/Proxmox or cloud VPCs, Docker; AI/Data: optional scenario generator; Databases: N/A (config-as-code state)
**Where it's valued** — Security training providers, penetration-testing firms, enterprise red/purple teams, universities, defense
**Careers it builds toward** — Penetration Tester, Red Team Operator, Security Lab Engineer, Offensive Security Instructor, Purple Team Lead
**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: broad lifecycle coverage — Reconnaissance (TA0043), Initial Access (T1190), Privilege Escalation (TA0004), Lateral Movement (TA0008), Discovery (T1046); used as the range's exercise map
• NIST CSF 2.0: Identify (ID.RA, ID.IM), Protect (PR.IR), Detect (DE.CM), Respond (RS.AN) via purple-team telemetry
• OWASP: relevant when web targets are included (Web Top 10); otherwise N/A
• CIS Controls v8: 18 (Penetration Testing), 12 (Network Infrastructure Management), 4 (Secure Configuration)
**Innovation** — Improved Existing Solution — cyber ranges exist, but a clean, versioned, purple-team-instrumented IaC lab is a strong reusable asset. Scores: Innovation 6/10, Startup 6/10, Enterprise-Readiness 7/10, Patent = No.
