IoT Smart-Device Data Extraction

Establish a repeatable, defensible extraction and analysis workflow for heterogeneous IoT smart devices.

**The problem**
IoT and smart-home devices (cameras, hubs, wearables, voice assistants) are increasingly central to investigations, yet they use proprietary firmware, non-standard storage, and encrypted or cloud-tethered data with no forensic standards. Investigators lack repeatable methods to extract evidence from eMMC/SPI flash, UART/JTAG interfaces, or companion apps. This gap leaves rich behavioral and location evidence inaccessible or acquired in a non-defensible way.

**What you'll build**
Build a structured IoT forensics methodology and toolkit covering hardware-level acquisition (chip-off, UART/JTAG, SPI flash dumping), firmware extraction and filesystem carving, companion-app and cloud-artifact analysis, and network-traffic capture. Produce standardized documentation templates and parsers for common device families to make extraction repeatable and court-defensible.

**Objective** — Establish a repeatable, defensible extraction and analysis workflow for heterogeneous IoT smart devices.

**Expected outcome** — A documented methodology plus parser toolkit that extracts and interprets data (timelines, media, sensor/location logs) from at least one class of real IoT device.

**Difficulty** — Advanced — combines hardware interfacing, embedded/firmware RE, and forensic rigor; hardware bricking risk raises the bar.

**Primary category** — DFIR; Secondary = Embedded/Hardware Security, IoT Security

**Security domains** — Primary = Digital Forensics; Secondary = Security Research, Incident Response, Malware Analysis

**Technical focus** — IoT Forensics, Firmware Extraction, Hardware Interfacing (UART/JTAG/SPI), Chip-off Forensics, Filesystem Carving, Companion-App Forensics, Cloud Artifact Analysis, Embedded Reverse Engineering

**Core technologies** — Languages: Python, C, Bash; Frameworks/Libraries: binwalk, firmware-mod-kit, Volatility (for Linux-based devices), scapy; Security Tools: binwalk, Ghidra, flashrom, sigrok/PulseView, Wireshark, ADB; Cloud/Infra: N/A (device-local + companion cloud APIs); AI/Data: pandas for artifact correlation; Databases: SQLite (mobile/app DBs)

**Where it's valued** — Law enforcement/digital forensics labs, IoT/device manufacturers (product security), insurance investigation, critical infrastructure, MSSPs

**Careers it builds toward** — IoT Forensics Specialist, Embedded Security Researcher, Digital Forensics Examiner, Hardware Security Analyst, DFIR Consultant

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: ICS/Embedded-adjacent tactics — Firmware analysis supports detection of implanted firmware (System Firmware T1542); Collection from device storage; largely a forensic acquisition exercise vs. attack-technique mapping
• NIST CSF 2.0: Identify (asset/data inventory), Detect (anomalous device behavior), Respond (RS.AN evidence analysis)
• OWASP: OWASP IoT Top 10 (insecure data storage, lack of physical hardening), MASVS for companion mobile apps
• CIS Controls v8: 1 (Enterprise Asset Inventory), 3 (Data Protection), 4 (Secure Configuration)

**Innovation** — Research-Level Project — IoT forensics lacks mature standards, so a repeatable methodology and device-family parsers contribute genuinely novel practitioner value. Scores: Innovation 8/10, Startup 6/10, Enterprise-Readiness 4/10, Patent = Possible.
