Isolated Malware Analysis Sandbox
Build a safe, instrumented, network-isolated sandbox for static and dynamic malware analysis.
Analyzing live malware on production or personal machines risks infection, lateral spread, and data loss, yet defenders must understand sample behavior to write detections and respond to incidents. Teams need a controlled, instrumented, and fully isolated environment where a specimen can be detonated and observed without any escape path to real networks. Building that safely — with monitoring, snapshots, and anti-VM awareness — is a core DFIR competency.
**What you'll build**
Construct an air-gapped/host-only virtual lab (FLARE-VM analyst workstation + REMnux, with INetSim/FakeNet simulating internet) that supports both static and dynamic analysis. Instrument with procmon, API monitors, network capture, and optionally an automated sandbox (Cuckoo/CAPE) to generate behavioral reports. Use snapshots for rapid reset and enforce strict host-only networking so no sample ever reaches a live network.
**Objective** — Build a safe, instrumented, network-isolated sandbox for static and dynamic malware analysis.
**Expected outcome** — A reusable sandbox lab plus a full behavioral analysis report on a real sample, including extracted IOCs and mapped ATT&CK techniques.
**Difficulty** — Intermediate — VM/network isolation and tooling are approachable, but safe handling and meaningful dynamic analysis add real complexity.
**Primary category** — Malware Analysis; Secondary = DFIR, Threat Intelligence
**Security domains** — Primary = Malware Analysis; Secondary = Digital Forensics, Incident Response, Threat Intelligence, Blue Team
**Technical focus** — Static analysis, dynamic/behavioral analysis, sandbox engineering, network simulation, IOC extraction, anti-analysis evasion awareness, PE/binary triage, memory analysis, detonation automation
