Memory Forensics & Malware-Analysis Automation
Automate end-to-end memory acquisition triage and in-memory malware detection to compress analyst time-to-verdict.
Modern malware increasingly operates fileless — living in RAM via process injection, reflective DLL loading, and in-memory PowerShell — leaving little on disk for traditional forensics. Analysts drown in manual Volatility triage that does not scale across dozens of enterprise memory captures during an incident. Without automation, dwell time increases and volatile evidence (encryption keys, injected code, network artifacts) is lost before it can be analyzed.
**What you'll build**
Build an automation pipeline wrapping Volatility 3 that ingests raw memory images (.raw, .lime, .dmp), runs a curated plugin suite (pslist/psscan, malfind, ldrmodules, handles, netscan, cmdline), and cross-correlates output into a scored anomaly report. Integrate YARA scanning of process memory, IOC extraction, and optional detonation of extracted PE artifacts in a sandbox, with results normalized to STIX for threat-intel sharing.
**Objective** — Automate end-to-end memory acquisition triage and in-memory malware detection to compress analyst time-to-verdict.
**Expected outcome** — A CLI/Python framework that consumes a memory image and emits a ranked malware-findings report (injected processes, hollowed PEs, suspicious network connections, extracted IOCs) plus dumped suspicious binaries.
**Difficulty** — Advanced — requires deep OS internals (Windows process/memory structures), Volatility plugin mechanics, and malware behavioral knowledge to interpret and score results correctly.
**Primary category** — DFIR; Secondary = Malware Analysis, Threat Hunting
**Security domains** — Primary = Digital Forensics; Secondary = Malware Analysis, Incident Response, Threat Intelligence, Blue Team
