Network Virtualization Security
Secure a software-defined/virtualized network fabric against control-plane compromise, flow manipulation, and lateral movement while proving micro-segmentation efficacy.
Software-defined networking (SDN), overlay fabrics (VXLAN/Geneve), and network function virtualization decouple the control plane from the data plane, introducing new abstraction layers where a compromised controller or malicious flow-rule injection can silently reroute or mirror all tenant traffic. In multi-tenant clouds and virtualized data centers, weak micro-segmentation and east-west trust let a single compromised workload traverse the entire fabric. The virtualized network is largely invisible to legacy perimeter tooling, creating detection blind spots.
**What you'll build**
Stand up a virtualized network security lab using an SDN controller and overlay networking to enforce zero-trust micro-segmentation, controller/southbound authentication, and flow-rule integrity, then attack it (rogue controller, flow-table poisoning, tenant escape) and defend it with east-west traffic inspection and controller-plane monitoring. Instrument the fabric with distributed telemetry (sFlow/IPFIX) feeding an analytics layer that detects anomalous flow programming and lateral movement. Deliver a hardened reference architecture aligned to NIST 800-207 zero trust.
