Ransomware Auto-Containment Bot

Detect ransomware behavior and automatically contain affected hosts and identities within seconds using confidence-tiered SOAR playbooks.

**The problem**
Ransomware encrypts at machine speed, and mean-time-to-respond for human SOC analysts is far too slow to prevent mass encryption once an outbreak begins. Manual containment — isolating hosts, disabling accounts, blocking C2 — takes minutes to hours that organizations do not have. There is a critical gap in automated, high-confidence containment that acts in seconds while avoiding costly false-positive isolation of healthy systems.

**What you'll build**
Build a ransomware auto-containment bot that consumes EDR/telemetry signals (mass file modification, shadow-copy deletion, known ransomware TTPs), scores confidence, and triggers automated containment via SOAR playbooks — host isolation, account disablement, and C2 blocking. It uses tiered response so low-confidence signals alert while high-confidence detections auto-contain, with full audit logging and rollback. The bot integrates canary files and behavioral detection to catch novel strains, aligning to NIST CSF Respond and MITRE D3FEND countermeasures.

**Objective** — Detect ransomware behavior and automatically contain affected hosts and identities within seconds using confidence-tiered SOAR playbooks.

**Expected outcome** — A working auto-containment bot integrated with EDR/SOAR that isolates a simulated ransomware host in a lab and produces an incident timeline with rollback.

**Difficulty** — Advanced — requires reliable behavioral detection, SOAR integration, and careful false-positive control on destructive actions.

**Primary category** — Incident Response / SOAR; Secondary = SOC, Endpoint Security, Detection Engineering

**Security domains** — Primary = Incident Response; Secondary = Blue Team, DevSecOps, Malware Analysis

**Technical focus** — Ransomware behavioral detection, automated containment, SOAR playbooks, host isolation, EDR integration, canary/decoy files, confidence scoring, C2 blocking, incident timelining, automated rollback

**Core technologies** — Languages: Python, PowerShell; Frameworks/Libraries: SOAR (Shuffle/Tines-style), EDR APIs, YARA, Sigma; Security Tools: EDR (Velociraptor/Wazuh/Elastic), SIEM, firewall/NAC APIs, canary tokens; Cloud/Infra: isolated lab, Docker, message queue; AI/Data: behavioral anomaly detection, ransomware TTP classifier; Databases: PostgreSQL, time-series store for telemetry

**Where it's valued** — Enterprises, MSSPs/MDR, healthcare, manufacturing, critical infrastructure, any high-ransomware-risk sector

**Careers it builds toward** — Incident Responder, SOC Engineer, Detection Engineer, SOAR/Automation Engineer, Blue Team Analyst

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: Impact — Data Encrypted for Impact (T1486), Inhibit System Recovery (T1490); Defense Evasion — Impair Defenses (T1562); detection targets Exfiltration and C2 (T1041, T1071). MITRE D3FEND for the containment countermeasures
• NIST CSF 2.0: Respond (primary), Detect, Recover
• OWASP: N/A
• CIS Controls v8: 10 (Malware Defenses), 11 (Data Recovery), 13 (Network Monitoring & Defense), 17 (Incident Response Management)

**Innovation** — Improved Existing Solution — auto-containment exists in mature XDR/SOAR products, but a confidence-tiered, canary-augmented open bot with safe rollback has strong educational and mid-market value. Scores: Innovation 6/10, Startup 6/10, Enterprise-Readiness 7/10, Patent = No.
