Smart-Contract Static Analyzer

Automatically detect common smart-contract vulnerability classes at the source-code level before deployment.

**The problem**
Smart contracts are immutable once deployed, so a single overlooked flaw (reentrancy, integer overflow, unchecked external call) can cause irreversible multi-million-dollar losses, as seen in The DAO and countless DeFi exploits. Most developers ship Solidity without systematic pre-deployment vulnerability analysis, and manual review does not scale to large codebases. There is a persistent gap between writing contract logic and proving it is free of well-known bug classes before it hits mainnet.

**What you'll build**
Build a static analysis engine that parses Solidity/Vyper into an AST and intermediate representation, then applies detector rules and taint/data-flow analysis to flag known vulnerability patterns (SWC Registry classes) without executing code. Integrate proven backends such as Slither and Semgrep, add custom detectors, and produce prioritized, developer-friendly findings with severity, CWE/SWC mapping, and remediation guidance. Package it as a CLI plus CI/CD gate so every commit is scanned before merge.

**Objective** — Automatically detect common smart-contract vulnerability classes at the source-code level before deployment.

**Expected outcome** — A working static analyzer (CLI + CI plugin) that ingests Solidity, emits a ranked findings report mapped to SWC/CWE, and blocks merges on high-severity issues.

**Difficulty** — Advanced — requires compiler/AST internals, data-flow analysis, and deep Solidity vulnerability knowledge, but builds on existing tooling rather than novel research.

**Primary category** — AppSec (Smart-Contract Security); Secondary = SAST, DevSecOps, Code Analysis

**Security domains** — Primary = DevSecOps; Secondary = Security Research, Blue Team, AppSec

**Technical focus** — Static Application Security Testing, AST parsing, control-flow/data-flow analysis, taint analysis, detector rule engineering, SWC/CWE mapping, CI/CD security gating, Solidity/EVM semantics

**Core technologies** — Languages: Python, Solidity, Vyper; Frameworks/Libraries: Slither, py-solc-x, Semgrep, Tree-sitter, ANTLR; Security Tools: Slither, Mythril (comparison), Solhint, SWC Registry; Cloud/Infra: GitHub Actions/GitLab CI, Docker; AI/Data: optional LLM-assisted triage, embeddings for pattern similarity; Databases: SQLite/PostgreSQL for findings history

**Where it's valued** — DeFi protocols, Web3 startups, crypto exchanges, blockchain audit firms, NFT platforms, enterprise blockchain (supply chain, tokenization)

**Careers it builds toward** — Smart-Contract Auditor, Blockchain Security Engineer, Application Security Engineer, DevSecOps Engineer, Security Researcher

**Framework alignment**
• MITRE ATT&CK: Not a runtime-adversary technique set; closest enterprise mappings are Exploitation for Client Execution (T1203) and Exploit Public-Facing Application (T1190) as the risk this mitigates. Primary alignment is SWC Registry + CWE (e.g., CWE-841, CWE-190, CWE-284).
• NIST CSF 2.0: Identify (vulnerability identification), Protect (secure development)
• OWASP: OWASP Smart Contract Top 10 (2025), OWASP SCSVS, OWASP Code Review; Web Top 10 A06 Vulnerable Components (dependency awareness)
• CIS Controls v8: 16 Application Software Security, 4 Secure Configuration

**Innovation** — Improved Existing Solution — static analyzers exist (Slither, Mythril), but adding curated custom detectors, CI gating, and clean SWC/CWE reporting is a strong portfolio build. Scores: Innovation 6/10, Startup 6/10, Enterprise-Readiness 7/10, Patent = No.
