Sophisticated Modular Malware Framework
Engineer a plugin-based malware framework with an encrypted C2 channel in an isolated lab, and produce the matching detection and emulation artifacts.
Modern adversaries no longer ship monolithic binaries; they deploy modular implants where a lightweight loader pulls task-specific plugins (credential theft, lateral movement, exfiltration) on demand. Blue teams and malware analysts who have never dissected such an architecture cannot reliably attribute, signature, or emulate these threats. Detection engineering and threat-emulation gaps persist because most training samples are simplistic single-stage payloads.
**What you'll build**
Build a defanged, lab-only modular C2 implant framework — a minimal stager plus a plugin bus that dynamically loads capability modules over an encrypted channel from a controller, mirroring frameworks like Cobalt Strike, Sliver, and TrickBot. Every module is instrumented for analysis, gated behind an explicit lab kill-switch, and paired with corresponding detection artifacts (YARA, Sigma, network signatures). This teaches the full attacker-and-defender loop within an isolated range.
**Objective** — Engineer a plugin-based malware framework with an encrypted C2 channel in an isolated lab, and produce the matching detection and emulation artifacts.
**Expected outcome** — A documented modular implant + controller with at least three swappable capability modules, an ATT&CK-mapped emulation plan, and a detection pack (YARA/Sigma/Suricata) validated against it.
**Difficulty** — Expert — requires implant architecture, encrypted C2 design, reflective loading, and safe detonation practices simultaneously.
**Primary category** — Malware Development & Emulation; Secondary = Adversary Emulation, Detection Engineering, Reverse Engineering
**Security domains** — Primary = Red Team; Secondary = Malware Analysis, Purple Team, Security Research, Blue Team
**Technical focus** — C2 framework design, plugin/module architecture, reflective code loading, process injection, encrypted comms/traffic shaping, staging & payload delivery, YARA/Sigma authoring, sandbox instrumentation, kill-switch & lab safety controls
**Core technologies** — Languages: C, C++, Go or Rust, Python, x86-64 assembly; Frameworks/Libraries: Nim/Go implant patterns, Donut, PE/ELF loaders, mTLS/libsodium; Security Tools: Sliver/Mythic (reference), Ghidra, x64dbg, YARA, Sigma, Suricata, Wireshark; Cloud/Infra: isolated ESXi/Proxmox range, redirectors, Docker; AI/Data: optional ML classifier for module behavior; Databases: SQLite/PostgreSQL for C2 task store
**Where it's valued** — Offensive security consultancies, red-team-as-a-service, EDR/AV vendors, national CERTs, defense and critical-infrastructure security
**Careers it builds toward** — Red Team Operator, Malware Developer (offensive R&D), Detection Engineer, Threat Emulation Engineer, EDR Research Engineer

**Innovation** — Improved Existing Solution — modular C2 frameworks exist, but a fully instrumented, safety-gated training framework with paired detection artifacts is a strong pedagogical product. Scores: Innovation 7/10, Startup 6/10, Enterprise-Readiness 6/10, Patent = No.
